Slate forms the base of this rugged path. And the rocks get increasingly jagged and pronounced as the hike ascends. Keep on trucking to reach a short reprieve. After three-quarters of a mile, the trail reaches a short saddle with fantastic views over Cave Creek. A quarter mile more and the the Black Mountain Hiking Trail reaches its peak. An American Flag marks the top.
To the east and southeast are views of Four Peaks and the McDowells. Directions From the intersection of and Scottsdale Road in north Scottsdalehead north on Scottsdale Road which turns into Tom Darlington for 12 miles. Parking for the trail is a quarter mile further on both sides of Military Road. I love the views of your picture on top of the Black Mountain.

Fabulous day, Excellent hike. Good workout! I came here around 1PM on a Sunday, and the parking lot was pretty full. I did the hike, it was just okay.
Steep with a well-defined trail, got up in 35 minutes. Views were very mediocre, and there's a US flag at the top which I thought was interesting. Didn't spend too much time at the top, ran into lots of people on the trail but not at the top, surprisingly. Got back down in 30 minutes, and I'd say going down is a bit more annoying than going up due to how steep it is! Love this hike. Busy trail. Wear the right shoes. You will need some grip coming down.

The jeep road route is a more steady grade and wider for jogging if you prefer. Hike This trail starts out with two strikes, but then redeems itself with good cardio conditioning and home-run panoramic views at the top.
The first strike is the parking. There are approximately 10 parking spaces on the west side of School House Rd. If you don't get one of these spaces, turn back to Cave Creek Road and find a space somewhere. This makes for a longer hike along a dirt street. The wash elevation is 2, feet and is the marked start of my description. The next strike against this trail is that from Military St.
If you are unlucky, you may be breathing some dust. With the development in the area, this road will probably be paved in the near future. Take the right on the Y. The left of the Y goes to some very nice houses.
The road turns into a jeep road. Great views to the North behind you. Great views will continue all the way to the summit. Great views to the southwest. The road turns to the southeast. Elevation 2, The trail shows sign of maintenance, but it is still primitive. This is apparently an alternate trail that avoids some of the jeep trail, but it is not the main trail so I won't elaborate.

You'll hike on Schoolhouse Road for a few hundred yards until you see the brown trailhead sign on your left. Leave the road here and start walking along the easy to follow trail. Here the trail parallels the dirt road and you get some increasingly pretty views of Cave Creek as you continue to climb. The trail is rocky, but easy to follow with the exception of one point you reach after 0.
There are a series of trails that meet here. One is currently marked by cairns and is the wrong way. You want to stay on the more well traveled trail that goes to your left up the spine of the mountain. We ended up following the cairns and were hiking on a trail that cross cut the mountain, eventually petering out.
We then bushwhacked up to the main trail. So stay left at this junction to avoid our mistake. Continue the climbing, but be sure to look around once in a while to enjoy the ever more impressive views of the area.
